FieldMask for SharePoint greatly improves SharePoint on the data visibility side. Out of the box SharePoint only allows users to set permissions at site level, list level or item level. However, SharePoint column level permissions just isn’t available out of the box, so you cannot target fields (columns) in a list to specific users or groups. This proves to be a decisive limiting factor when it comes to business processes.
With FieldMask for SharePoint you can choose which fields or columns in a list are shown on New, Edit and Display forms to which users, AD groups or SharePoint groups.
Real world examples:
- in an employee display form, you can only show the personal phone number and salary to the HR group and not to everyone else;
- in the employee edit form, only IT can fill-in the devices that the employee has been given access to and only HR can fill-in personal details;
- in the employee new form, only show the fields that are usually known at the time the employee is added to SharePoint, in order to remove clutter, and show the rest of the fields in the edit form;
- in the edit form for any list, only allow specific people to change the status of records.
FieldMask for SharePoint is super easy to use, just enable it for the lists you want and configure each field – straight from the browser.
